At 347 units, Related’s purchase of the Mattapan property is by far the largest such acquisition under the AOP. In 2022, the city helped finance the purchase of 36 small apartment buildings totaling 114 apartments in East Boston for affordable housing. On Monday that deal became reality as Mayor Michelle Wu announced the sale of the complex to developer Related Beal with the help of $10 million from the city of Boston to guarantee all apartments will remain affordable. Under the deal, existing tenants won’t pay more than 2% per year increases, and new tenants will have to meet income restrictions. The program is part of a broader strategy by Mayor Michelle Wu that has seen the city pour hundreds of millions of pandemic recovery dollars into the construction and acquisition of affordable housing.

After that meeting in September, DSF put the property on the market with the stipulations of it being in the city’s program, and eventually chose Related Beal for the opportunity. The sale is hailed as good news for tenants, who have raised alarms about rental increases and eviction proceedings by DSF since 2018.
